Newsletters must be current and timely. A Nielson survey asked, "What makes a certain newsletter the most valuable one you receive?" Over 40% of newsletter readers cited the following:
- Informs of work-related news or company actions (mentioned by two-thirds of users)
- Reports prices/sales
- Informs about personal interests/hobbies
- Informs about events/ deadlines/important dates
A "what have you done for me lately" phenomenon is at play; newsletters must justify their space in the inbox on a daily basis. Relevance in the past is not enough. Newsletters must be relevant today, addressing user's specific needs in the moment.
